Has this week’s snow and frost put you in the holiday spirit yet? If not, the Calgary Civic Symphony’s Christmas and Neujahrskonzert on December 8th is sure to melt even the Grinch’s heart!
Conducted by Artistic Director Rolf Bertsch, this festive concert promises a delightful mix of holiday classics, including Rutter’s I Wish You Christmas, and Mannheim Steamroller’s Deck the Halls and Stille Nacht. Add in the nostalgic Charlie Brown Christmas and timeless Panis Angelicus, and there’s truly something to delight every listener.
For an extra dose of dazzle, Calgary’s favourite “Divas,” Kathleen Morrison and Barbara King, will join the Symphony to bring their signature glamour - not to mention costume changes - and breathtaking vocal artistry to the stage of Jack Singer Concert Hall.
"It’s such a joy to be back with the Calgary Civic Symphony for the holidays,” commented soprano Kathleen Morrison. “Singing alongside this incredible orchestra is such a treat, and we love bringing our Diva voices and festive cheer with every set—and every gown!” Artistic and Executive Director of Alberta Vocal Arts Association, Kathleen is a passionate advocate for the classical vocal arts and has been described as “riveting” by Opera Canada. In addition, Kathleen serves as Director of Solo Voice Studies at Calgary’s Renert School, is a respected adjudicator and clinician, and owns a prominent vocal studio.
"We had such a wonderful time with the Civic Symphony in 2022,” added Barbara King, “and it’s an absolute honour to be invited back for this year’s Christmas and Neujahrskonzert concert. The energy of the orchestra and the audience make every performance magical. I’m especially excited to share some sparkling operetta this time around!” A mezzo-soprano known for her dynamic and versatile performances, Barbara has incorporated gymnastics into her operatic portrayals, most recently as Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus and as Mercédès in Carmen with Manitoba Opera. Known for her “hugely powerful and affecting voice” and “exquisite vocal command of a three-octave range”, Barbara also serves as Artistic Director of Calgary Concert Opera.
Drawing inspiration from the Vienna Philharmonic’s iconic New Year’s celebrations, the Civic’s December 8th concert will also shimmer with the elegance of Viennese favourites, including Die Fledermaus Overture, Pizzicato Polka and, of course, the Blue Danube Waltz.
Whether you're a fan of holiday favourites, Viennese classics, or simply love live music at its finest, this concert promises to be a highlight of the season. In the words of the Divas, “The holidays, opera singers, fantastic musicians, a beautiful venue and great audience… it doesn’t get better than this!” Don’t miss it!
