Calgary’s premiere string ensemble, Kensington Sinfonia, invites you to experience a lush and evocative program titled New Romantics on Sunday, February 9 at St. Stephen's Anglican Church. With a repertoire that intertwines the rich traditions of classical music with fresh, contemporary voices, this concert promises to be a feast for the senses.
At the heart of the program is the world premiere of Unsung Legacies, Concerto for Dizi and Strings by Edmonton composer Lai Cheukman Joseph. This innovative piece, commissioned by Kensington Sinfonia, explores the concept of “home” and the deep connections that tie us to place and memory. Flautist Jiajia Li, known for her virtuosic artistry and expressive interpretations, will bring this work to life by blending the rich tones of three traditional Chinese dizi flutes with the ensemble’s strings. Her performance will take you on a journey from Hong Kong to Edmonton and back, offering a heartfelt exploration of identity and the meaning of home. This piece was made possible through the generous support of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
The concert will also feature String Quartet in E Minor by Ina Boyle, a rediscovered treasure from one of Ireland’s most significant yet overlooked composers, highlighting her lyrical depth and artistry. This Canadian premiere has been specially arranged for string orchestra by Kensington Sinfonia's double bassist, Matt Heller.
Also included in the programme are Appalachian Polaroids for Strings and Tape by Steven Snowden, a hauntingly beautiful piece that captures the rugged landscapes and vibrant cultural heritage of the Appalachian region; and Serenade in E Major, Op. 22 by Antonín Dvořák, a timeless Romantic classic filled with warmth, charm, and elegance.
Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the beauty and power of Kensington Sinfonia’s artistry. With New Romantics, the Sinfonia continues to offer a perfect blend of musical nostalgia and innovation.
