Mount Royal University’s Conservatory and Land’s End Ensemble are once again teaming up for an exciting night of contemporary music. Following the resounding success of last season’s collaboration, this year’s program is set to push artistic boundaries while championing the works of today’s living composers, featuring a dynamic blend of minimalist, avant-garde, and politically charged compositions that will leave a lasting impression.
The evening begins with Steve Reich’s Clapping Music, a rhythmic masterpiece performed by a mixed ensemble. This groundbreaking piece sets the tone for an exploration of the power of sound and rhythm. Next, Osvaldo Golijov’s Death of the Angel brings passion and depth through a stirring string nonet, evoking both sorrow and beauty. Following this, Moerae, a piano trio by Mary Kouyoumdjian, draws inspiration from Greek mythology, weaving a narrative that reflects themes of fate and destiny.
Audiences will also have the opportunity to experience two world premieres: A Species of Wonder, a new work for mixed ensemble by acclaimed JUNO Award-winning composer Allan Gordon Bell, and Dragonfly, an exhilarating trio by Michael van der Sloot. The program also includes Four Paintings by Leestemaker, a richly textured piano sextet by Vincent Ho. Notably, all three composers are based in Calgary, highlighting the remarkable talent that our city has to offer.
The concert will conclude with Louis Andriessen’s Workers Union. Written for “any loud-sounding group of instruments,” this politically charged work unites all performers on stage for an unforgettable conclusion.
Don’t miss this electrifying evening at Bella Concert Hall, where innovation meets tradition in a concert that will captivate and inspire. Students Union will take place on Feb. 22, 2025 at the Bella Concert Hall, Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts, Mount Royal University. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., with a pre-concert chat at 6:45 p.m.
