PREVIEW: Internationally Acclaimed Pianist Makes Calgary Debut

Chinese Canadian Pianist Tony Yike Yang Presents Lunar New Year Concert

The University of Calgary School of Creative and Performing Arts proudly presents an extraordinary evening of music featuring internationally celebrated Chinese Canadian pianist Tony Yike Yang in his highly anticipated Calgary debut. This special solo piano recital takes place on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, Rozsa Centre, University of Calgary.

Hailed by CBC Music as one of Canada’s finest young musicians, Tony Yike Yang first garnered international attention at age 16 as the youngest-ever laureate in the history of the International Chopin Piano Competition, winning the 5th prize in 2015. He has since earned accolades at other prestigious competitions, including the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, and has performed with world-renowned ensembles such as The Cleveland Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic, and Orchestre Métropolitain. His artistry has also been showcased before esteemed figures, including Her Royal Highness Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Queen Mathilde of Belgium.

Tony Yike Yang: Lunar New Year Concert offers a unique musical experience featuring the complete performance of The 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals Book 2: Preludes and Fugues by acclaimed five-time Juno Award-nominated Chinese Canadian composer Vincent Ho, alongside a selection of Yang’s most beloved solo piano works from the classical repertoire, including Polonaise-Fantaisie in A-flat Major, Op. 61 by Chopin and Fantasy in B-minor, Op. 28 by Scriabin.

Yang will also be recording Ho’s composition at Rozsa Centre on February 14 and 15 for international release through Naxos Records, one of the world’s leading classical music labels.

A distinguished University of Calgary alumnus (BMus ’98), Vincent Ho is celebrated for his distinctive compositions that blend traditional classical forms with Chinese harmonies, jazz influences, and contemporary sensibilities. His 12 Preludes and Fugues capture the essence of each Chinese zodiac animal, bringing their personalities and gestures to life through music.

This event is made possible through the generous support of Calgary arts philanthropists Walt and Irene DeBoni. All proceeds from ticket sales will directly support the music program at the School of Creative and Performing Arts.

Audiences are encouraged to arrive early for a pre-concert mingle and silent auction at 6:30 p.m., where they can meet student ambassadors, enjoy live music, and participate in the silent auction. All proceeds from the auction will contribute to the Music Impact Fund, ensuring continued excellence and opportunities for music students at the University of Calgary.
